SERVERSServants of the Sanctuary
16th September 2007
Our group of servers both adults and young people give splendid service in assisting with the weekly Eucharist and other Services in our Church. There is always a slight change in the ‘who’s who’ with some away at university and others busy doing other tasks. We work on a flexible rota
We are pleased to encourage new recruits and after rehearsals and practice, we find they are able to give valuable service to the church.
Our Handbook gives various points including:- Servers assist the priest in the offering of the church’s greatest act of worship at the Eucharist.
Servers assist in a ceremonial way, and are often ‘on show’, not being seen as ‘people’ - just the ‘meaning’ of what you do !! That is why we wear cassock albs (with a girdle), so that our own clothes are not noticed. We try to sit still, control and blend our movements; move around ‘smoothly’, so that we do not draw attention to ourselves.
There are some ‘old fashioned’ but interesting booklets about ‘Serving’ and ‘Church Ceremonies: - Altar Book for Servers, Pocket Guide for Servers, Learning about Vestments and Altar Serving
We prepare for the service duties in the ‘servers’ Vestry, which is below the ‘Clergy’ Vestry
Do come along if you would like to find out more.
